Over 35 million Americans wear dentures and use denture creams such as Poligrip and Fixodent, which have been discovered to cause zinc poisoning. Denture adhesive creams contain zinc, and excessive exposure to zinc can lead to copper depletion, resulting in serious neurological problems.

Neuropathy is a disorder of the nerves of the peripheral nervous system and is commonly caused by zinc poisoning. Severe denture cream neuropathy can even result in permanent disability and paralysis. The symptoms of denture cream neuropathy can include:

  • tingling, numbness, burning, or pain in the extremities
  • paralysis or loss of ability to move arms, hands, legs or feet
  • muscular weakness
  • poor balance and coordination
  • abnormal blood pressure and heart rate
  • constipation and bladder dysfunction
  • decrease in walking stride

Just recently, GlaxoSmithKline added a new insert to Super Poligrip warning users that the denture cream contains zinc and that "using excessive amounts of this product over a prolonged period of time has been reported to result in serious health effects from increased zinc intake." The new insert urges consumers to speak to their doctor before using the denture cream if they are taking daily zinc supplements.

In addition to neuropathy, zinc poisoning can potentially cause other neurological problems such as:

Dysesthesias: Abnormal sensations that occur when a patient touches something. Patients may experience burning, wetness, itching, shocks, "pins and needles", or other uncomfortable sensations in their extremities.

Paresthesias: Spontaneous feelings of numbness, pinching, sharp, deep stabs, electric shocks, pinching or buzzing in the arms. Symptoms may also include feelings of cold, warmth, burning, itching, and skin crawling.

Anemia: A blood disorder characterized by low red blood cell count.

Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes: Disorders of the hematopoietic stem cells.

Additionally, patients with denture cream zinc poisoning have been misdiagnosed with: Multiple Sclerosis, Demylinating Syndrome, Chronic Inflammatory Demylinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP), and Guillan-Barre Syndrome.  Read our Denture Cream Frequently Asked Questions.
