Gadolinium is an ingredient of the contrast agents that are used in an MRI or MRA. Currently, there are five products in use by radiologists and medical professionals that contain gadolinium. They are Magnevist, MultiHance, Omniscan, OptiMARK and ProHance.

In recent years, more and more cases are appearing in which patients who have gone through an MRI or MRA with gadolinium-containing contrast agents have developed a serious medical condition called Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis, or Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NSF/NFD). This is a form of kidney disease or renal failure characterized by skin lesions and redness, muscle weakness, joint pain, hypertension and more.
