Popcorn Lung (Diacetyl)

Nationwide Popcorn Lung Lawyers

"Popcorn lung" is the term that has been used to describe a rare, life-threatening lung disease that has afflicted workers in the popcorn industry. The technical term for this disease is "bronchiolitis obliterans." Bronchiolitis obliterans is a form of obstructive lung disease. The airways, called the bronchials, become blocked by scar tissue and inflammation. This is an irreversible condition which makes it very difficult for the person to blow air out of their lungs.

"Popcorn lung" is thought to be caused by an artificial flavoring called "Diacetyl," which is used in microwave popcorn. Workers in popcorn plants who mix Diacetyl for use in popcorn packets suffer high incidences of "popcorn lung."

Symptoms of Popcorn Lung Disease

People who develop this horrible lung disease develop shortness of breath and hardening of the lung tissue. This disease can become life threatening and require the patient to undergo a lung transplant.

The Latest News on Popcorn Lung

ABC News and the Associated Press reported on September 6, 2007 that "Popcorn Lung Disease" has now been diagnosed not in a popcorn plant worker but in a man who consumed large amounts of popcorn.

Dr. Cecile Rose, a lung specialist at the National Jewish Medical & Research Center in Denver, who diagnosed this individual's case in February of 2007, told the Associated Press that although no definite link has been established between the patient's heavy popcorn consumption and his lung disease, "the possibility raised public health concerns."
