Recent studies have linked the use of intra-particular pain pumps, used following surgery, to a serious injury know as Postarthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis (PAGCL). This is an extremely painful condition in which the cartilage in the shoulder deteriorates, causing the bones to grind together. PAGCL is irreversible and typically requires additional surgery for treatment.

Pain pumps are medical devices that are used to manage post-operative pain. Many orthopedic surgeons use pain pumps to deliver continuous doses of pain medications directly into the shoulder via a catheter after arthroscopic shoulder surgery. When too much pain medicine is delivered into the shoulder joint, the cartilage begins to deteriorate resulting in permanent shoulder pain, loss of mobility, and total shoulder replacement for many patients.

Symptoms of PAGCL include:

  • Shoulder pain
  • Decrease range of motion
  • Stiffness or weakness in the Shoulder
  • Clicking, popping or grinding of the shoulder
