Overview

Alli is an over-the-counter weight loss drug that has been approved by the FDA for weight loss in adults 18 years and older. Alli contains a lower dose of Orlistat than its prescription counterpart Xenical with the recommended dose of Alli being one 60 mg capsule three times a day. Alli is manufactured by GlaxSmithKline.

Xenical (generically known as Orlistat) is a prescription weight loss drug that was approved by the FDA in 1999 for obesity management. Xenical contains a higher dose of Orlistat than Alli with 120 mg capsules. Xenical is manufactured by Roche Laboratories.

The use of Alli and Xenical has been linked to serious and potential life threatening injuries such as liver disease and fatal liver failure.  Read our Alli Frequently Asked Questions.

Alli, Xenical and Liver Failure

Liver failure is a serious medical condition in which the liver cannot perform properly and ultimately stops functioning; often resulting in death or liver transplantation. Liver disease is a medical term used to describe a broad category of diseases including:

  • Cirrhosis
  • Hepatitis
  • Liver Cancer

In August 2009, the FDA announced that it was investigating 32 reports of liver failure and liver disease among Orlistat users over the last 10 years. There have also been reports of rectal bleeding (Xenical only) and kidney and thyroid problems liked to Alli and Xenical. The FDA is currently reviewing data on suspected cases of liver injury submitted by the manufacturers of both Alli and Xenical.

Orlistat drugs differ from other weight-loss treatments because they do not increase metabolism or suppress the appetite to prevent weight gain. Rather, these drugs keep the body's digestive system from absorbing dietary fat, thus reducing caloric intake.
